Best Weird Food in Portland

What we consider weird may be another person’s ordinary, and sometimes we like to step into the shoe’s of that other person — or in this case their taste buds! We’ve done some digging to find some of Portland’s “weirdest” local and foreign cuisine. So, take a number with us while we sample some of what Portland offers.

TILT

TILT – Angry Andy

Looking for the kind of burger you have to hold sideways just to fit in your mouth? Look no further than TILT in the Pearl District. TILT offers some of the largest, most stylish burgers and sandwiches in Portland. From the massive The Big Tilt with two chuck patties, bacon, egg, american cheese, pickles, tomato, onions, lettuce, their signature tilt sauce, and a three-layer bun, to towering and spicy Mad Andy with one chuck patty, an onion ring, bacon, egg, blue cheese, jalapenos, lettuce, tomato, and mayo. It’s easy to lose your balance when wielding these maces of meat. Check them out at tiltitup.com.

Kachka – Khachapuri

Feeling a little adventurous, comrade? How about some Russian food at Kachka off 11th Avenue in SE Portland? At Kachka you can sample Siberian Pelmeni, a beef, pork, veal, and onion dumpling lathered with a delicious garlic broth. Or, try something you can tell your friends about with their Crispy Beef Tongue, a citrus marinated rhubarb, roasted garlic, and chive blossom explosion of flavor delivered to your taste buds. And, of course, it wouldn’t be Russian without a doughy, delicious pastry like their Khachapuri, smoked sulguni cheese in a fluffy dough with dipping sauce. Get your Eastern European fix and check their menu at kachkapdx.com.

Le Pigeon

Le Pigeon – Octopus and Bone Marrow

Now let’s try something a bit more close to home, like pigeon. No, really. Le Pigeon is a French, American restaurant off East Burnside Street, on the corner of SE 8th Avenue. Le Pigeon specializes in, you guessed it, their Grilled Pigeon! Served with sprouted barley, pickled elderberry, wheat beer, and sake creamed morels, the Pigeon de la maison is another worthy addition to what some in the Pacific Northwest might called weird. They also serve a Beef Cheek Bourguignon in strewberry baked beans, with favas cacio e pepe. And, another house-favorite is their Octopus and Bone Marrow appetizer. Be sure to check out their website as their menu often changes, lepigeon.com.

E’Njoni Cafe

E’Njoni – Veggie Feast

Looking for a fun vegan option? Then come with me on a safari to E’Njoni Cafe, an Ethiopian wonderland of hummus, flatbread, and curry located on North Killingsworth Street, near the PCC Cascade Campus. E’Njoni Cafe does serve some meat options, but their vegan plates really are the main attraction. Start off with their fried plantains or a bowl of peanut yam soup. Then, move on to, our personal favorite, the Veggie Feast, a huge flatbread-lined plate of curried split peas, curried cabbage, peppers and carrots, red beets, spinach with garlic and ginger, zucchini with a tomato sauce, and so much more. The Veggie Feast is served with 10 large spoonfuls of each of E’Njoni’s vegan entrees, with easily enough food for three or four people to tear off a bit of flatbread and scoop flavor directly into their mouths. Check out E’Jnjoni’s website at www.enjonicafe.com.

Viking Soul Food

Viking Soul Food – Norwegian Meatball Wrap

Of course it wouldn’t be a Portland food list without a food truck on it, and for our weird pick this time around we vote Viking Soul Food. Located in SE Portland, off Southeast Belmont Street and near the corner of SE 43rd Avenue, Viking Soul Food offers meatballs, fish, and cabbage in a hearty boat of a wrap, or a sea of food on a plate. Start with a pickled egg with black pepper mayo and cavier, or dig into their house Jarlsberg cheese and roasted shallots spread on a rye crisp. Ready to pillage an entree? How about Norwegian meatballs in caramelized goat cheese gravy with pickled cabbage. Or, get their PØLSE in a wrap with Swedish potato sausage, melted Jarlsberg, lingonberries, tangy coleslaw, and Dijon mustand tucked neatly into Lefse, a traditional soft Norwegian flatbread. As always, be sure to check out their website, especially because this longhouse does orders for pickup for the Viking on the go: www.vikingsoulfood.com.

That’s about all the drooling our keyboard can handle right now. We hope you find something that piques your interest and gives you an idea for your next meal out. If you have any great ideas for some adventurous food around Portland please share them with us! There’s only so much Googling “weird food in Portland” is able to satisfy our curious taste buds.
