Need some helpful information on how to pack your new storage unit?

Below is a list of insightful tips to help you get the most from your storage. Take care of planning, packing, and protecting your belongings because that will transfer to stress-free storage for the length of your rental.

  1. Good Lock: Choose a quality lock that is hard to open with a simple hair clip. In our experience, a disc type lock is a good choice because these locks are very difficult to cut off and you must use your key to close them, therefore, preventing any accidental lock-ins.
  2. Stable Base: Pack in boxes or totes that are tough, and of more or less uniform size. Stack heavier things on the bottom. Followed by lighter ones, and at the top stack fragile breakables, so they don’t get crushed. Above all, you want to create a sturdy foundation to build on.
  3. Prevent collapse: Fill all boxes to the brim and use old sheets, towels, and newspapers as packing. If your boxes are half or three fourths full, they will collapse when other boxes are placed on them.
  4. Protect items: Treat all metal objects with rust protectors and things like books with Boric powder or tobacco leaves to protect them from insect attack. Use mattress and sofa protectors.
  5. Create Airflow: Place items strategically to allow air to circulate inside the locker. Lay down plastic sheeting or tarps on the floor of the unit and place boxes on wooden pallets. As a result, this will keep boxes from suffering any water-related damage.
  6. Prevent mold: Leave the doors of all appliances ajar to prevent fungal growth. Use the space in appliances to store small things. Make sure your items are dry going into your storage unit. Use water absorption products like “DampRid” to control the humidity in your unit.
  7. Valuable items: To secure valuables ensure they are put at the back or the very bottom. Therefore, it makes it hard for thieves to locate and possibly take items.
  8. Code boxes: Maintain a diary and record which boxes are placed where and what each box contains. Stick labels on each box with a coding that matches your list. Never mark the contents on the labels. For example, marking a box “painting by Monet” or “jewelry” is just asking for trouble.
  9. Maintain access: If you opt for a larger storage unit you can leave space between your furniture and boxes so that accessibility is maintained. This is helpful if you need to get to your belongings periodically.
  10. Read contract: Be familiar and observe all the rules of the facility. Consequently, having to move-out would not be fun.

In conclusion, by taking simple steps to ensure a good storage experience you will most importantly, keep your belongings in the same condition as when they were first stored.
